Bad Press Dept. is an independent publication focused on the systems, technology and public decisions that shape communities. We use public records, primary documents, data and reporting to explain how those systems work in practice.
Our goal is not to tell readers what conclusion to reach. We document the record, provide context, distinguish fact from analysis, and make the evidence behind our reporting as accessible as practical.
Our approach
Bad Press Dept. publishes reporting, analysis and commentary as distinct forms. Reported work is guided by principles of accuracy, fairness, verification, transparency, independence and accountability. Commentary and advocacy, when published, will be clearly identified.
We use the Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics as a reference point while developing our own editorial standards and practices.
